The web has been buzzing over this article on evidence Apple is readying a video iPod. More interesting than the specs of the gadget is the potential for another iTunes-iPod business system.
Mirroring the iTunes ecosystem in motion pictures could be a very cool, and lucrative affair. This article alludes to the hardware for the ‘Pod, which we can anticipate will interface with your TV. With the mini form factor, a home appliance with an iPod sized price tag could allow for easy movie downloading and viewing.
The studios, looking to overt the disaster that record labels suffered through just might be hungry for a viable new-media distribution alternative. Steve has a ton of Pixar content, and since Pixar is shopping for a new distribution partner, he has excellent bargaining power.
And then the fun part: pricing. I’ve heard estimates of $9-15 for a movie download. Given QuickTime’s compression expertise, I’ll bet we see a new file format complete with DRM. If you can get a 2 hour movie down to a hundred or two MB’s, you’ll be hard pressed to beat the convenience. Oh yeah, and add in all the SuperDrive Mac upgrades that will happen once you can download and burn commercial flicks.
Count on Apple to keep your digital lifestyle hopping.
