Today’s news was the unveiling of Nokia’s web appliance. I haven’t been a Nokia customer since my 5190, so I was amazed at how appealing I found their new 770.
The philosophy behind the web appliance/thin client isn’t new, but the idea of a wifi browser-to-go is hot. Smaller and cheaper than a laptop, and more capable than a PDA or smart phone, the 770 fits a nice slot. The price isn’t bad either.
Rather than retread the murky waters of PIM software and pay-per-byte cell networks, the 770 gives you what you want - web access, free. Open Source will keep things interesting. Best of all, this device could at last see the fruition of the Netscape “browser as a platform” prophecy.
Now pepper in some VoIP and you may have the perfect machine. I’ll take two.
