Most people that complain about being busy really aren’t. Truly busy people don’t have time to, or just don’t believe in complaining. So, I won’t profess to be an expert in time management. But I have learned some things. In the time I have written for MacMerc I have been laid-off, fired and quit a job to return to school, got my MBA and became a father.

The only way I was able to make consistent contributions to MacMerc during this time (most of which was work on the Freeloader Friday series) was to allocate time according to three rules.

  • You must have an order to your activities. Obeying priority ensures you get to the important and due items first.
  • Most of your time is lost during unstructured time. While we all need ‘down time’ to recharge, open ranged of free time can quickly go to waste on unproductive activities.
  • Lastly, similar to unstructured time, we waste all kinds of mental time. Time spent doing physical but not mental exercises like showering and driving should be used to think about upcoming activities or engage in learning opportunities, e.g. books on tape.
